I am beyond tired of hearing the women in my office complain about the “yellow dress” that Sarah Jessica Parker wore to the 2010 Oscar’s. Yes - they are still cackling about it 2 months later. Their chief complaint is that the dress was “blah” and “ugly”. I’m a firm believer that everyone is entitled to their own opinion (especially when it comes to fashion) but you should at least have a legitimate reason backing that opinion up, no? Defend your ideas! “It’s just ugly” seems obnoxiously uninformed.

That being said, I will now tell you all just how in love I am with SJP’s red carpet look AND why I feel that way!

Let me just get this disclaimer out of the way first – this blog is in no way about the celebrity. It’s about fashion. While they are excellent platforms for fashion designers, and I do adore Miss Parker, I’m strictly sticking to style here.

Now…let’s get down to it.

Once again, Miss Parker shows off her style chops. As soon as I saw SJP making her way down the carpet, I knew she was wearing Chanel. The gorgeous satin yellow Chanel Spring 2010 Couture gown – it was simply divine. An effortless soft yellow bodice elegantly balanced by silver flower appliqués. To quote a friend, the dress “is smooth like butta” - the rich lemon satin flows flawlessly from head to toe. I love the neckline; it’s very different and it creates such a sexy impression. The construction of this gown makes it all the more interesting - how is her neckline staying up without being attached to the rest of the dress? Obviously there must be boning to keep the structure in tact, but you would never know. It’s an effortless chic, and Parker wears it well.

Did no one notice the downright Audrey Hepburn-ness of this gown? Sleek and elegant lines, a flattering shape that is both slimming and regal. Tabloids have labeled her red carpet look a washout “mellow yellow” but I think she really was one of the show-stoppers. Her high top bun and the silhouette of her gorgeous, daring gown made Sarah Jessica Parker is a modern-day example of the vision that was Hepburn at her pinnacle scene in My Fair Lady. New Yorker’s go-to color, the almighty black, is being pushed to the back of the closet this season in favor of the LWD (Little White Dress) - taking it’s rightful place front & center in our runways, storefronts, magazines, and wardrobes.

Who isn’t in favor of showing off your hard-earned tan in a flattering white frock? From crisp cotton to fluid chiffon, designers such as Badgley Mischka and Diane von Furstenberg are creating white creations that are quickly becoming new classics. Don’t fret New Yorkers, black will always be chic but the LWD is definitely the way to stand out in style this summer.

There I am, minding my own business on a Sunday morning. I make a cup of coffee and sit down at my computer to sort through the junk emails I’ve gotten all week, when BAM! Fashion Cupid must have smacked a bullseye on me for a direct hit, because I’m in LOVE. I always keep Express in my Shopping Rolodex for staples like tank-tops, t-shirts, leggings, and the occasional button-down shirt or party top. But an adorable blush chiffon dress? Who knew?! It’s true, Express has really been stepping up their line of cocktail dresses over the past year or two - I have an adorable LBD that I bought for New Year’s Eve 2009. But I almost fell off my chair when I saw the detail and hands-down adorableness of this dress. The next day I spent my lunch hour trekking to the Express at South Street Seaport to try it on. I picked up both the black and the blush, but the blush emphasizes the chiffon ribbon pleating with more feminine detail - which is beyond flattering, and nothing screams feminine chic more than the short, swingy skirt. Paired with a skinny black belt, some tall black gladiator heels, and a cropped black jacket - this makes the perfect outfit for a night out on the town or dinner with friends. I practically skipped up to the register, got an extra $20 off because of a promotion, and am taking the dress out for it’s first spin this Saturday!
